Homeschool planner

This sheet is titled Weekly planner, Monday to Friday. One sheet of A4, landscape, five columns, and no clock anywhere on it. It is drawn by the page it sits on. A geometry engine written for the job measures the grid to the paper and writes the PDF byte by byte in the reader’s browser, so nothing is stored, nothing is licensed from anybody, and no template file exists to be out of date.

Ruled, not timetabled

The other five day sheets in the range carry time rows down the left, first hour at the top and last hour at the bottom. This one does not. It is five columns of writing rules, and the day is divided by whatever gets written into it rather than by the hour. As drawn, the sheet reports 45 rules and seven words of set type, with no boxes and no squares on it at all.

A household week that runs to no fixed bell is badly served by a grid that insists on one. Equally, a week that does run to fixed times is better served by the hourly sheets, which put 08:00 to 16:00 or 09:00 to 15:00 down the side as real rows. The two shapes are kept as two sheets rather than one sheet with a compromise in it.

Five days, and no week start control

A five day sheet is Monday to Friday. That holds whatever the week start is set to, because five named columns beginning on a Sunday would be a working week with two days swapped out. So the five day sheets carry no week start control. A control that the drawing ignores is a control that lies about what it does, and it is better absent than decorative. The seven column sheet in the range is the one where the first day of the week genuinely changes the drawing.

Nothing printed in the columns

There are no subject headings, no reading or maths blocks, no attendance line and no tick boxes. Seven words of type on a whole sheet of A4 is close to a blank grid, and that is what it is meant to be. Columns headed by day, by child, by subject or by anything else all take the same ruling, and the only difference is what somebody writes at the top.

Black only

Everything on the site prints in black. A form whose meaning depends on colour comes out of a mono printer with that meaning stripped off it, leaving grey rules that used to distinguish something from something else. Black line work prints the same on any machine, and colour added by hand afterwards is colour that survives the photocopier as well.

The file and the range

The finished PDF is 3,629 bytes, all of it line work and lettering. It is written in the browser at the moment it is asked for, from the same drawing pass that produced the preview on the page. The site holds 25 sheets built this way, running to 1,119 rules, 234 boxes and 93 time slots between them. Month grids and dated year sheets are not included: a month grid is a calendar, and calendars are answered elsewhere rather than approximated here.
